February 2009  CWL St. Paul Diocesan Resolutions & Legislation Communique #5

“A resolution is one member’s concern becoming the voice of the League.”
“Legislation is social justice in action. It is the carrying out of League resolutions to influence government policy.”

Government in Canada is back in session, so I urge you to continue to act on the resolutions that were passed at the 2008 National convention.
Resolution 2008.01 Preventing Human Trafficking at the 2010 Olympics.
Resolution 2008.02 Restrictions on the Sale of Products Containing Triclosan
Resolution 2008.03 Toxic Substances in Household Products
Resolution 2008.04 Accurate Food Labelling
Resolution 2008.05 Transportation Tax Credit for Rural Post Secondary Students
Resolution 2008.06 Revision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act

Has your council been acting on the Provincial initiative to send letters regarding the Prevention of Human Trafficking at the 2010 Olympics? St. Paul councils are requested to send letters in the 3rd week of each month from now until the Olympics start. You still have time! At the Provincial Executive Meeting last weekend it was mentioned that in some areas the initiative has been broadened to include other women’s faith groups and organizations. If you have the opportunity to discuss this initiative with persons outside CWL, please pass the message on. At a minimum you should be including this information in your parish bulletin to involve your whole parish. Included in this communiqué is the Action guide. Please also include Canadian International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound on your letter list. His e-mail is rpound@stikeman.com and his phone number is 514-397-3037.

A message from our Provincial Legislation Chairperson, Mary H., asks us to pray about possible legislation that could be introduced in the USA now that Barack Obama has been installed in office. His Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), if it passes, is a serious threat to human life with its massive expansion of abortion rights and would allow federal tax dollars to promote abortions. Please pray that this American legislation will not pass

Keep yourselves informed about issues in your own communities and across the country. Send a letter to your government official on any of the resolutions that interest you. Visit <www.cwl.ca> for the complete listing of resolutions still active and waiting for your action.
